Does weeping in adults increase the probability of prosocial behavior among observers?: A systematic literature review
Zíková, Lucie ; Lukavská, Kateřina (advisor) ; High, Radka (referee)
The presented systematic literature review seeks answers to the question "Does weeping in adults increase the probability of prosocial behavior among observers?". Our methodology follows the PRISMA Statement recommendations. On the basis of predefined key words 2278 records have been identified in the Scopus and PsycINFO databases. Overlapping records have been removed and abstracts and whole texts have been screened to evaluate the fulfilment of the eligibility criteria and the relevance for the predefined question and this resulted in the inclusion of 8 articles representing 10 experiments into the final analysis. This thesis brings an overview of these studies and their conclusions and methodologies. It discusses the strengths and weaknesess of the various approaches. It turned out that the fact, whether participants are presented with a decontextualized stimulus material or whether they are at least slightly acquainted with the context, plays an important role in the research. If the context is included, it appears that the influence of tears on the willingness to help is not as strong as in the case of its absence. Furthermore, many other factors have been found to be relevant that affect this relationship. We also discuss the adequacy of the the concept "prosocial behaviour" as hypotheses...
Maternal experiencing and coping with problems connected to infant difficult temperament
BURDOVÁ, Hana
Bachelor thesis is solving problems of maternal feelings and coping with difficulties related to difficult temperament of infants. At the beginning of theoretical part, basic terms as infancy, temperament and inconsolable crying are defined. Next, the summary of specific features of infants with difficult temperament with special attention to insomnia and crying. The individual strategies of care of for difficult infants are also described. Finally, characterization of mental wellbeing of mothers of difficult infants is provided. In practical part, results of qualitative research based on analysis of interviews with mothers of difficult infants are presented. Difficult temperament, as mothers often found, was manifested by inconsolable crying and insomnia. Demanding child care was attributed by mothers differently - to genetic background, difficult birth, or pregnancy stress however, children were predominantly blamed. As for strategies to comfort children, mothers were intensively searching and trying for the best one but none was found to be reliably effective. My research study also indicated that unasked for advices and trivialization of the situation by of relatives were for mothers very stressful.
Determination of inflammatory markers of the eye based on the analysis of tears - potential and limits
Mandíková, Šárka ; Daňková, Pavlína (advisor) ; Sičáková, Silvia (referee)
In this study, we aimed to determine the levels of cytokines IL-1β, IL-4, IL-10, IFN-γ, MIF and VEGF in tears derived from healthy subjects. We tested cytokines as potential markers of inflammation for their potential use in clinical practice. Having reliable method for measuring cytokine levels in tears would enable an early diagnosis of eye diseases. In two phases, cytokines in tears of healthy individuals were analyzed using Bio-Plex Cytokine Assay (Bio-Rad). We assessed the suitability of methods for diagnostic purposes as well as the suitability of our selected cytokines. Statistically significant positive correlations of cytokines were confirmed: IL-10 with IFN-γ (r = 0,81), MIF with VEGF (r = 0,42 / r = 0,49), IL-1β with IL-10 (r = 0,52), IL-1β with IFN-γ (r = 0,55), IL-1β with VEGF (r = 0,38), IFN-γ with VEGF (r = 0,45) and IL-4 with VEGF (r = 0,48) in healthy subjects in tears. IL-4 (r = -0,37) and IFN-γ (r = -0,42) correlate negatively with age. In healthy individuals, there seem to be no differences with regard to gender, BMI, body fat, time of meal consumption prior to tear collection, eye strain when using a computer, dry eyes. Thus, studied cytokines are suitable for diagnostic purposes. Significant differences in concentrations of four (IL-1β, IL-10, IFN-γ a VEGF) of the five...
Relationship between crying and prosocial behavior in adults: pilot experimental study
Zíková, Lucie ; Lukavská, Kateřina (advisor) ; Smetáčková, Irena (referee)
This thesis deals with the verification of the hypothesis, that a crying person can be helped better than if the latter would not be crying. The aim of this thesis is to carry out a pilot version of an observational experiment and thus identify the problematic moments and other variables, which might enter into the experiment. Mixed design was used to verify this relationship and it consisted of a quantitative analysis of data gathered from mood questionnaires as well as from the observational experiment and the qualitative analyse of data from semi-structured interviews with respondents. The thesis presents basic theoretical concepts and studies relevant for its aim. The survey results have shown that individuals are not capable of identifying the crying during the proposed experimental situation, because they have not paid much attention to the person concerned. The degree of attention towards a crying person depended, inter alia, on the assumed purpose of the presence of the crying person. The distance from the observed situation, the estimation of the competencies of the actress (whether she could handle the situation by herself) and the evaluation of the seriousness of the situation also played their role. It also turned out that when the respondent decided not to help the crying actress; it...
